EUA enfrentam resistência no Iraque

Se Saddam vendeu seu próprio país, ou a guarda nacional foi arrasada pelos bombardeios, enfim, o fato é que as forças militares iraquianas não ofereceram resistência alguma à ocupação de Bagdá. Porém, como já era de se esperar, o povo iraquiano não está se sentindo libertado. A cada dia que passa, aumentam os protestos contra os invasores. Será que veremos uma nova "Somália", ou os EUA assumirão, antes disso, que erraram ao passar por cima da comunidade internacional?

And with all this faith going around, I am beginning to have faith that the combination of Washington's ambitions for the region, its willful faith-based disdain for local sensibilities and realities and its clumsy blood and iron military tactics could lead to a murderous combination of Vietnam and Somalia for the occupying forces.

And imbued with bloody irony, I have a deep faith that the Americans will then want to internationalize the occupation and rediscover the joys of multilateralism without at any point admitting that they made a mistake -- because the effects of that mistake will be showing in time for the Bush 2004 campaign.
